The Centre Abel provides professional training in woodworking, agriculture and farming and housing to its occupants and it is 7 km (4.34 miles) from downtown Grand Bassam on an area of 24 hectares (60-acre), close to the lagoon.

Each year, we enroll 30 students in our woodworking program, which last on average three years and allows them to acquire all the necessary skills to build doors, windows, closets, chairs, tables and beds.

Our agriculture and farming programs host yearly about 20 students between boys and girls. We provide both theory and practical lessons so that after three years of training each of them can manage a small land lot from sowing to sale.

Here students are trained to breed farm animals like chickens, rabbits, pigs and goats. Through sale and canteens’ supplies, both agricultural and farming productions contribute to Communautè Abel’s self-sustainability.

The Carrefour Jeunesse is a place where kids and adolescents meet to play. Over the years it has become a landmark for the whole community of Grand Bassam, not to mention a means of opportunity and risk prevention for youth thanks to its numerous social, educational, cultural, and sports initiatives.

Each year circa 200 people benefit from our counselling team. Our équipe makes on-site visits to verify who is actually in need and at the end of this phase our counselling team puts together customized programs for each beneficiary.

For older beneficiaries, the Communauté Abel provides literacy lessons on-site in various neighborhoods of Grand Bassam. Though these classes cannot replace the official education system, they improve day to day life for each student by providing primary literacy skills. Every year 150 people attend Carrefour Jeunesse’s literacy classes and 270 in other Communauté Abel’s facilities.

Couture training provides both theory and practical lessons to teach how to manufacture clothes. All the 40 girls learn how to draw a fashion model, hand sewing and how to use sewing foot control pedal and automatic machines.

About 30 kids attend each year our pre-elementary school that will allow them to enroll in primary school. For this purpose, our team is also in charge of providing them with birth certificate registration.

Our music lab teaches each year to more than 20 students how to play guitar, piano, flute, drums and xylophone or sing in a choir. Some groups also use this space for rehearsals.

We have two indoors spaces for kids and adolescents to play checkers, table-football, the game of the goose and the local traditional game of awalé with the supervision of a children’s entertainer. Carrefour Jeunesse has an outdoor facility to play soccer and basketball too. Every year more than 4000 kids benefit from these spaces.

Our Center for Documentation and Research is a permanent window for observation, analysis and needs’ identification of the context where we work. The CDRF conducts outreach to villages and schools by organizing debates, plans prevention and awareness meetings.

Since 2013 Communauté Abel has opened at CDRF a multimedia space with 12 computers where everyone, especially students and teachers from public and private schools can attend our computer science classes.

Kirikou space is an opened sandy space where we organize games for kids from the most disadvantaged neighborhoods who come spontaneously to play. Next to it there is an indoor space with free wireless internet and where twice a week we also arrange reading sessions for kids.
